COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP CAMPAIGNS
Our process of building collective action for communities unfolds in three broad phases over a three-year period: Community Mobilization, Campaign Delivery, and Strategy Alignment.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Example)
In the Year 1 Community Mobilization phase, we 1) identify and congregate community-based leaders that hold legitimacy and influence with youth, families, and residents, 2) select and train youth and young adult ambassadors to jump start a collective action strategy, and 3) provide these ambassadors with the tools and coaching to design a powerful narrative campaign with community input to kickoff the community-based efforts.
TandemEd worked with the community steering committee to oversee the process and clarify the role they sought to play in guiding the community ambassadors. The community steering committee consisted of community members who have the visibility, trust, and respect of youth, families, and residents in Pittsburgh.
TandemEd along with the steering committee worked with select Pittsburgh youth and young adult community ambassadors. These ambassadors worked on the campaign formation and implementation using their own talents and those derived from the community.
Institutional responsiveness and investments
In the Campaign Delivery phase, also within Year 1, we work to deploy the campaign narrative of identity, purpose, and values throughout the communal and cyber space via social media, print media, arts, and interaction protocols

In the Year 2 Strategy Alignment, we facilitate communities to deploy their internal assets and resources toward their own campaign purposes and goals, and support youth and residents to hold accountable their public institutions and government officials for aligning resources to community objectives.

Pittsburgh Public Schools, in response, aligned its programming and work with students, including professional development training for principals on infusing the community's identity narrative into school messaging and core to the district-wide WePromise initiative, focused on raising the grade point averages of Black males to be eligible for state scholarships.
The campaign itself inspired many participants and recipients to either create, advance, or join initiatives and actions that build off of the assets of their community, and to negotiate the relationship in more beneficial ways with responsive institutions. One highlight of an inspired initiative came by way of Leon Ford, who after participating began his "Voices" Project to further change the narrative and stop the violence in the community.
